Gosport

Gosport is home to naval base HMS Sultan and Naval Armament which often used to supply Munitions for naval ships. Gosport was one of the main troop embarkation sites for the D day landing of Normandy. Hardway in Gosport was chosen to accommodate the large Landing Ships which formed part of operation overlord. Night and day troops and vehicles loaded and departed from Hardway to join the invasion force, this hectic activity continued through to September 1944. The Hardway ramp had served its strategic purpose and later relegated to embarking food and medicines to the starving of Europe.

Fareham

Fareham was once famed for its delicious strawberries and brick manufacturing.

Fareham’s origins go back to a small settlement developed before Roman times. The Romans came to the area in about AD43 and built a large fortress at Portchester now known as Portchester castle. In the medieval period Portchester was an important port. The castle saw the embarkation for several campaigns to France led by England’s kings.
